The formation of mother-of-pearl

The formation of mother-of-pearl is a complex process that involves the shellfish's response to a foreign substance inside its body. When foreign substances, such as sand or parasites, enter the shellfish's soft body, it begins to secrete calcium carbonate and mother-of-pearl in order to protect itself from these "intruders".

These substances gradually encapsulate the foreign matter and form a protective layer. This encapsulation process is not a one-time event, as the shellfish will secrete about 3-4 times a day, each time covering a full thickness of only 0.5 microns. Such an encapsulation process will take place day after day for at least two years, culminating in the formation of pearls of various colours.

The main component of mother-of-pearl is calcium carbonate, which also contains some proteins secreted by shellfish. These proteins act like a glue to bind the calcium carbonate and other components together to form this composite structure of mother-of-pearl. This structure makes mother-of-pearl very strong and not easy to break.
